Introduction

This expedition was part of the cooperation agreement between the Dutch ministry of Agriculture and Fishing and the Bulgarian Agricultural Academy. Travel and accommodation costs were covered by Bulgaria. The contact between the genebank in Sadovo and CGN had already been established in 1987, but had been limited to exchanging material. Therefore the proposal from Sadovos genebank, to let a CGN-employee participate in one of their collecting expeditions, was accepted enthusiastically. An expedition was chosen in which local varieties of vegetables were collected.
