Beet, lettuce, chicory and endive in Italy, 1994

Collectors: Frese and Burenin

Introduction

The cooperation between the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) in St. Petersburg and the Centre for Genetic Resources in Wageningen, the Netherlands created the opportunity for two collecting expeditions in the Caucasus in 1990 and 1991. The collecting expedition in Italy led by Dr. V.I. Burenin(VIR) can be seen as a continuation of this cooperation.
The German-Dutch board of trustees for plant genetic resources instructed a team to collect Beta, Lactuca and Cichorium in mid and north Italy. The expedition would give priority to collecting Beta vulgaris ssp., since an analysis of the International Databank for Beta(IDBB) had shown that the region in Italy north from 40°30" was underrepresented in genebank collections.

In 'Documents' you will find the report in German language which contains a list of collected germplasm. We do not have the collecting forms that were used during this expedition. CGN does not have chicory and endive collections. Beets were transferred to IPK in 2001. The beet, chicory and endive data were never entered in our database.
